Airing his dirty kitchen

I'm fantastically excited about our kitchen project that is going to be happening soon.  We're getting it redone!  For a while we were thinking that maybe we could do a family fun redo ourselves.  That is until I heard the horror stories of it.
When we bought our house, the kitchen was the one FAIL. of it:

and the wallpaper and curtains and liquor bottles strewn throughout the house and the stench of dog and the monkeys and cougars in the master bedroom and the mirrored wall and candles and wax (sex freak?  maybe).  But all those things are quick fixes.  (this picture is from the inspection.  NOT our mess.  My mess is less red checked washcloths and much more fingerpaints.  and Us Weeklys.  and protein bars)

So we're having a kitchen guy come on Monday to pick our brains.  I'll probably pick his more.

Is there anything you love/would change about your kitchen?  What do you think is a MUST for a kitchen?  Let me know your suggestions!  I've got to get my gears in motion!

  1. We are about to start our kitchen. My #1 request is counter space...lots and lots of counter space. I also want double ovens and a pot filler over my stove. If my kitchen wasn't a little tiny box, I'd love a bigger fridge and an island. Good luck - it's probably going to be a stressful remodel, but so worth it in the end.

  2. i'm a bachelorette who's not much of a cook, so i don't have any MAJOR must-haves. i'm really into cabinetry and counter tops, though. like i need enough counter space to work on and enough cabinetry to store all my shit.

  3. You know, under cabinet lighting is a good thing to have... and light, bright colors for me!

Good luck. It will feel so good when it's finally done, I'm sure!

  4. My kitchen was remodeled right before we bought it and I love it. Let me know if you want pictures. I can email them to you and you can take any ideas from them.

  5. I'd personally like some more counter space, a new oven and dishwasher, and replace the damn linoleum flooring with tile. Good luck!

  7. A dishwasher and garbage disposal! After having lived without for a number of years and now finally having both again, I am pretty sure I'll never go back. I also agree with plenty of counter-top space and a fairly deep double sink... Hope you will have lots 'o before and afters!

  8. I would like to change EVERYTHING about our kitchen, but alas I cannot because it is a rental. You are so lucky you can get in there and take everything apart. I'm excited to see your results. :)

  10. Crap I just realized my first comment didn't show. Oh well. It was just about me hating my tiny, white, apartment kitchen.

  11. No carpet.

Carpet should never be put in any room where there is a water source.(i.e. kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas)

  13. The only thing I would really change about ours is the counter tops. I wish they were that pretty marble-looking stuff. But instead, it's ugly...I don't know...formica? Weird because everything else in the kitchen is very modern - stainless steel, cherry cabinets. I did just get an island (on wheels) last week though. It has a wine rack (as if there's any extra to store. Ha!) and a place to chop veggies. It's pretty much my new favorite thing. For realz.

Keep documenting your progress. I LURVE a good remodel. Like a fat kid loves german chocolate frosting. Out of the tub.

  14. for me, an eat in kitchen is a must, so i wouldn't get rid of the breakfast nook or at least arrange the kitchen in a way where you still have an eating area. i would also go for recessed lighting, which makes a huge difference, as well as some cabinetry lighting if you still wanna go for the clear glass look. total granite countertops, with ideally some sort of island and either tile or hardwood floors. you could do those black hardwood floors you liked oh so long ago and they would still pop against your other hardwood in the house. oh...and, you know i love white cabinets. and some nice stainless steel appliances and maybe a little pantry. is that enough ;) why don't you just build my dream kitchen and me and the kids can come over everyday for breakfast! sound good?

  16. I want to change everything about my kitchen. It's awful, from the PURPLE paint to the florescent light. I think the most important thing is counter space, of which I'm always running out. And good lighting helps, too. Right now ours is a "work in progress". What colors are you thinking?

  17. Oh my, we just got our kitchen redone and it is quite a project. About 5 months is what it took us, but we really gutted the hell out of it.

We did our dishes in the bathtub for about 4 months!!

Musts: Under cabinet lighting, this cool device that doesn't allow cabinets to slam shut...it's kind of a robotic-like hindge...really cool, and cabinets with pull out drawers.

    Good luck:)

  19. Ooo... I love kitchens, when i have a house of my own it'll be the place i spend most of my time in (aside from my bedroom of course).

Kitchen should have biiiiig counterspace, and oven, refrigerator, etc etc. White colored is the best, because i love white.

Oh, and lots of cookie jars (including the cookies, of course, lol)
