hands on

I've fallen into the slippery slope of reading everyone's blogs instead of writing on my own.  Damn you, Google Reader!  I'm a creature of habit and when things change I typically take the road mostly traveled.

So what have I been up to, you ask?  Well, I'm putting in 140% awesome mom right now.  I had this kick in the face realization that this is what I've got.  This is their one and only childhood in my hands.  Tv can wait, facebook can, frantically cleaning the house just because can kiss me arse.  Hells.  Even the Office and The Mentalist can wait.

I've decided that we need to do more story time (recommended is 20 minutes a day- not as easy as it sounds), more crafts, more hands on, more outside, more library, more friends.  In fewer words, I had to pull my shit together.  So that's exactly what we've been doing.

I paid my $110.86 fee to the library.  That's right.  And was it bittersweet or what? stop judging me.  now.  We have been reading a lot of books.

We've been doing lots of crafts.  We made those bird feeders with toilet paper rolls and peanut butter and bird seed.  We hung them up on our snowman's arms with pipe cleaners.  Unfortunately I didn't foresee our family of deer and their extended relatives eating them.  Come spring I hopefully will not find dead deer in our yard with perforated bowels.  (Why is it that pipe cleaners are the staple to children's crafts, yet really all they are is fuzzy stuff wrapped around really sharp wire?)

Crunchy the Snowman
We made these little pretzel snowmen.  I swore up and down that they would not tempt me no matter how hungry I was.  ha.  wrong.  I ate every last one of these M effers.  oh, in two hours.

Funny thing about this is I seem to have more hours in the day, the house is more effortlessly tidier, everyone is happy.  One of those phenomenons.

  1. it's so hard to balance really...sometimes I'll be reading blogs or doing homework while my daughter is just sitting there, watching and waiting for me to be done. it's heartbreaking.

good for you and the library. we read a lot but haven't been to the library yet. for shame, i know. i'm so terrified she'll tear the place apart...

  3. OK, first, those pretzel snowmen are ADORABLE!

Second, my sister always has a lot of library late fees, but she says she doesn't mind, it's all going to a good cause!! Does that help ease the financial pain?

  4. It IS hard to blance. While my kiddos are older, they still need my attention. The house stuff gets easier because you can make them clean though. hehe

I have a huge fine at the libray too. HOWEVER, its not my fault! No really-it's not. Hmm..that might be a good blog story!

  6. my best gal pal and her six year old son stood at my house last weekend. Sat-Sun. Saturday, I was like... this isn't so bad, I know I could do this one day. By Sunday evening I was EXHAUSTED. I still haven't recovered. I am SO not built for being a mom.

  10. I'm so proud of you!! When I go down to my sister's in the summer (she's a teacher and therefore has it "off") we try to do all of these things with the kids...reading, going to the pool, going to the library, etc. You're 100% right...this is the only childhood they're going to have and if you aren't present in it every single day, you can't get that back. Ever. And you will regret it. I've missed you but I count this as a perfectly good excuse to be absent. Maybe you can sit down once a week and let us know what you've done all week. That won't exactly fill my Kiera-Tank...but then it's not all about me, is it? ;) I, too, hope you don't find the remains of Bambi after the big thaw. Whoopsie. Oh well. Live and learn. We have little moments like that all the time. And isn't it funny how..when you're not glued to the computer, things get DONE? Yeah, that puzzles me all the time. Happy Friday!!

  11. How in the world do you rack up a $110.86 bill at the library?? Is it late fees?

  14. Google Reader and Facebook can really suck all the time away from you, that's for sure! I get so mad at you people in my reader sometimes because you're all so cute and clever and funny. Darn it.

How on earth can you get that kind of fee???

  15. It's hard...and it gets harder as I follow more blogs. I used to be able to ready everyone daily. Now, I try to do 3 or 4 per week of every blog I follow.
