Taking the plunge

I've said before how we really, really don't watch much tv.  Really not at all.  Mr Incredible and I love The Mentalist, Castle and The Amazing Race, and he loves hockey and football, but other than that very rare.

So what is it with feeling like canceling our cable is going to be a sentence?  Isn't it kind of crazy that having cable is just what you do?  It's NUTS.  It's give or take $60.  Sixty dollars a month.  That is ballpark $700 dollars a year.  (!!!!)  Basically we pay about $3 an episode for our favorites.  But even not really because off season, reruns, etc.  AND you can nearly find any show on hulu if you wait 24 hours (except the Mentalist)

So why am I getting cold feet?

When I called to cancel the lady said that for $11 a month we can just get the basic channels.  That seems to cure my hesitance, but do I really want to pay $11 more (than I have to) a month?  I know, it's the all or nothing in me.  It's seems obvious to do that, right?  (When I can't get ahold of Mr Incredible for more than 5 minutes, I reach out to you, blog readers.  Delight in that.)

  1. I'm a girl who can't live without tv so I'd be more than thrilled at saving the $50 and just spending $11!

  2. If you really are not much of a tv watcher I'm sure you would do fine with or without the $11. Me...I'd go freakin nuts!. I'm a total tv junkie.

  4. $11 for basic sounds like a steal! However how long will this offer last? Is it one of those $11 for a year and then we pull the rug out from under you and charge a zillion dollars? And oh look you signed a contract in blood that requires you to pay this to us for another 5 years.

  5. We may or may not get our cable for free. I'll never tell. But I can relate to your hatred for having to pay for that crap... I did for a long time.

I'd say go for the $11 plan and see where it gets you.

  6. I would try out the $11 for a while and see how it works. You can always cancel it later if you decide you want to save even that.

My friends just cancelled theirs last month. It is only bothering their kids, so much that their eyes are glued to the TV when they come over to my house.

  7. I'm not a big television watcher either, but we keep all of that stuff for my husband's sports television habit.

My two cents is that if you cancel it you can always buy it again if you miss it, right?

  8. Don't go cold turkey. Your head might explode. I would just cut back to the $11 a month (which sounds like a great deal!) and see how that works. If you still don't watch it, ditch that too.

I hardly ever watch TV either, but hubs pays the cable bill every month so whatever.

  9. I can't relate. I watch tv all.the.time. Seriously, the minute I get home I turn it on and J ends up watching it all night too because he's freaky and doesn't sleep much. When we have conversations about saving money, never once does cancelling cable come up.

My advice is to switch to the $11 plan and see how that goes. But clearly, I have problems, so please take my advice with a grain of salt!

  10. no cable here for 2 years now Kiera and we're doing fine catching the one show we like to watch with the bunny ears. don't even miss it one bit. waste of time if you ask me...just like facebook, ha, ha. still haven't been able to break that one bad habit yet ;) give it a try and you can always get basic later on if you need to...$8-11 a month is pretty standard for basic cable, i know cuz we did that first before we went cold turkey. i'm betting you won't even care once its gone!

  11. i say definitely go for the $11 plan. even for non-tv watchers, that's totally worth the times you will watch.

(quasi has like 1.3 million channels and you don't even want to know how much that costs.)

  12. I canceled my cable when Hubby began traveling a lot. We had all the ESPN football channels or whatever. He's a sports junkie.

Since he spends a lot of time in hotels, they have cable there. I love TV...but to be honest, there is a lot of crap on cable channels, anyway, so I feel that I'm being ripped off. Every show I watch is on local channels and they are FREE!

I'm a huge on hulu.com. I usually watch the shows that I missed there. :)

But $11 is a darn good deal!!

  13. I second (or third or eighth) the $11 basic cable idea. I've had a similar plan for years now and think it's just fine. And I don't have three beauties to chase around like you do! xo

  14. I am on the $11 plan, I like still getting the basics. But I have to admit I sometimes just keep the TV on for background noise so it is pretty much ALWAYS on.

But if you watch most shows on the computer, then that is even better!!

  15. No cold turkey, don't do that to yourself! The basic plan still allows you to get the Mentalist (and what is with CBS hoarding that show, put it online already!). ESPN 360 has a lot of the college games online so Mr. Incredible would still be able to watch those

  16. I say, really, how many hours do you watch tv? I grew up in a house without a tv and I think I'm almost normal :-)
The only reason we have cable is because here it is a package with the internet connection, otherwise we wouldn't have it. Since I grew up without it I really don't watch it much.

  17. We do not have cable. We have a digital antenna that easily and clearly picks up Rochester, Buffalo and some Canada channels. We pay exactly 0 a month for cable! ;o)

  18. I know I'd survive without TV but I think part of me might die. The part that is not rational, obviously.

Do it a little at a time. That's my advice.

  19. Ive always thought it would be brilliant to just pay for what you use for cable...like phone minutes...lol
